Energy Transition
Inland Seas Advisory offers a variety of services to accelerate marine fleet decarbonization and enable the transition to clean, renewable Biodiesel fuel.
A leading indicator of the future of Great Lakes maritime transport is the IMO’s net-zero framework. Approved in April 2025 and entering into force in 2027, this framework will mandate emissions reductions for large ocean-going vessels. This regulatory signal is one that all domestic marine operations cannot afford to ignore.
Maritime shipping consumes about 5% of the world’s annual oil supply and faces binding net-zero emissions targets by 2050. For Great Lakes vessel operators, Biodiesel offers the most immediate and practical path to compliance. Biodiesel is a clean, renewable, domestically produced drop-in fuel that reduces emissions today without waiting for hydrogen, ammonia, or battery technology to reach commercial scale. With increasing domestic supply, a well-developed supply chain, and broad support among marine engine manufacturers, biodiesel blends offer marine fleets a practical and affordable solution for decarbonization.
